How is Grey Portland cement made?
Crushing, batching, calcination, cooling, and grinding are some of the steps used to make Portland cement, a hydraulic cementing substance composed of clay and limestone. Its excellent strength and numerous uses have made it one of the most often utilized forms of cement in contemporary construction projects.

The large raw materials such as quarried limestone and clay are crushed into appropriate particle sizes suitable for subsequent processing using crushers. After the mixing process, the crushed and preliminarily homogenized materials are thoroughly combined, ensuring all components are evenly distributed and fully blended. This allows the quality of raw materials from different batches to become more stable.
Grinding raw materials is a crucial step in the production of grey Portland cement.Raw materials that have already been crushed and homogenized are further ground into incredibly fine powders in this step.During the grinding process, various raw materials (such as limestone, clay, iron ore powder, etc.) are carefully mixed in exact ratios to ensure that the chemical composition of the raw meal is uniformly constant. After being ground, the raw meal powder that meets the requirements is sent to a storage silo to await the calcination process.
The raw materials are first sent into a preheater, which is typically composed of piping, cyclones, and heat exchangers. Through efficient heat exchange and airflow organization, the raw materials are heated to about 800°C, removing moisture and improving their burnability. The preheated and dried raw materials are then fed into a rotary kiln, which is the core equipment for the calcination process. The rotary kiln is usually made of refractory materials and equipped with devices such as burners, cooling units, and sealing systems. Under high temperatures, the raw materials undergo physical and chemical changes, forming cement clinker.
Clinker enters the cooler, where it is cooled to around 150°C through ventilation or spray cooling, in order to prevent changes to the internal crystal structure of the cement clinker. The cooled clinker then proceeds to the grinding stage, where it is ground into powder form using a ball mill, in preparation for subsequent storage, packaging, and transportation.
Finally, Portland cement enter packaging process, and then they can be loaded for transportation.
